Third-Hand Smoke?

Everyone has heard of the obvious first hand smoke, and then theres the commonly heard secondhand smoke. But have you ever heard of third hand smoke?

Doctors from Mass General Hospital for Children in Boston have been looking into this idea and  have come to the conclusion that there are invisible toxins that are left lingering after the cigarette is done being smoked, these toxins can be harmful days after the ciggarette has been smoked.

Researchers said, “breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of infants and children.”

The gist of this idea is that no matter what your doing, your not only harming yourself when you smoke a cigarette. Children are being strongly affected by this, there are carcinogens in third-hand smoking and with these carcinogens comes cancer risks for anyone who comes in contact with them.

If that doesn't make you want to stop smoking then maybe seeing exactly what your putting into other peoples bodies by smoking will help:

The substances in third-hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arsenic; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, the highly radioactive carcinogen that was used to murder former Russian spy Alexander V. Litvinenk on 2006. Eleven of the compounds are highly carcinogenic.

How would you like to be the one to blame for a child's terminal cancer? Think about it.

  1. Sierra, your blog contains lots of interesting information. I find this post the most interesting. I completely agree with you here...Whenever I see a parent smoking in the direct vicinity of their child it drives me crazy! I don't understand how they do not comprehend that they are putting their child's life in danger. They could be giving their kid cancer, among other harmful diseases. Very interesting blog, entertaining/unusual information.

  2. Sierra, looks good! I really liked your most recent post, I had never heard of 3rd hand smoke before and definitely agree that that is something more people should be made aware of. Your blog looks great also, I really like the color scheme and background pattern. Keep up the good work!

  3. I really liked reading this blog. Right before I read this I was brainstorming with a friend for a project we are doing, based on fear in anti-smoking campaigns. I think that people should be informed of what they are putting into their bodies, and how what they are doing effects not only themselves, but the lives of many others around them. We need more awareness of the negative side effects of smoking, and we have done a pretty good job so far. In the past twenty years smoking in America has decreased. I really like that you are getting out the message on anti-smoking.
